Lane closures while safety work carried out on motorway near Penrith
Published at 15:30, Saturday, 06 October 2012
Essential safety work is to be carried out on the M6 near Penrith from Monday.
The work will take place between junctions 39 and 40 and will involve replacing the central expansion joint on the southbound carriageway at Lowther Bridge.
The hard shoulder will also be resurfaced.
Work is scheduled to take place overnight between 8pm and 6am and will be completed by October 15.
During this time there will be a 50mph speed limit and lane closures affecting both carriageways.
Highways Agency service delivery manager Mark Mosley said: “This is a necessary piece of work which will remove the possibility of debris from the failing expansion joint causing a hazard for drivers.
“The work will also improve the condition of the hard shoulder for road users.
“We have arranged for the work to be carried out overnight so that disruption to motorists will be minimal, but I would encourage people travelling at these times to be aware of the work and allow a little extra time for their journeys while the project is taking place.”
