B&M Bargains will create 40 positions when it expands its current Whitehaven store, with another 40 jobs provided at the new Workington branch opening next month.

Work is currently taking place to double the size of the Whitehaven store at Bridges Retail Park, as it takes on the empty unit next door which was formerly Lidl.

The revamped shop will reopen on Saturday August 23, followed two weeks later by the new Workington branch, on September 6.

The news has been welcomed by Whitehaven Town Team, which was set up to improve the area.

Stephen Murphy, of the team, said: “It is fantastic that 40 jobs are being created. It’s also great that another empty unit in the town is to be filled.

“If you look at the businesses that are opening up in Whitehaven, we have got a few – this is brilliant for the town as a whole.”

The expansion will see the store double in size and offer a wider variety of stock including groceries, furniture, wallpaper, paint and DIY products.

Store manager Lisa Hough said: “We’re really proud to be opening a larger store in Whitehaven, creating an extra 40 jobs and continuing to play our part in the local community.

“We have a team of colleagues who are willing to provide great value products and world-class service to our customers.”

A search is now on for a local “hero” to open the new Workington branch, which is taking over the old Halfords outlet at Derwent Howe Industrial Estate.

Heroes can be nominated by friends, family or work colleagues and can be someone who makes life better for people in the area, works hard for a particular cause or is renowned for their charity work.

Nominations can be made until August 29, by emailing
