Jail warning for danger driver who caused death of Cumbrian pensioner

A Carlisle man has admitted causing the death of an 87-year-old great grandfather by dangerous driving.

Malcolm John Russell, 45, of Hopes Hill Drive, was charged following the death of John Lomas on June 4 last year.

Mr Lomas, from Threapland, Aspatria, was driving a Toyota Yaris car when it was involved in a collision with Russell’s BMW on the A596 at Scales, between Aspatria and Wigton.

He was airlifted to the city's Cumberland Infirmary, where he later died.

In court today, Russell pleaded guilty to causing his death by dangerous driving.

He was remanded on bail for background reports and will be sentenced on November 9.

In the meantime he was banned from driving.

Judge Paul Batty QC told him he should read nothing into the fact that he had been allowed bail.

“There are sentencing guidelines and they indicate that a custodial sentence is virtually inevitable," he said.
