AN investigation has been launched after a knife was discovered in a Christmas present for a toddler.

Hidden danger: Dad Darren McCarron with the toy truck which had a knife in its packaging and three-year-old Cay-cee Muskett, Kelly McCarron and Junior

The knife – a blade taped to a piece of cardboard – was found hidden in the bottom of a parcel given to Junior Muskett.

His mother Kelly McCarron, 25, of Moorside Drive, Workington was shocked to see it in the packaging of a toy truck from Poundstretcher.

A spokeswoman for the store confirmed an investigation was underway and they were reviewing processes ‘immediately’.

The present was bought for Junior by Kelly’s father’s partner Lynne Wild, 42, of The Green, Little Broughton, who got it from Poundstretcher in Finkle Street, Workington.

Junior opened the wrapping but Mrs McCarron’s sister Debie then opened the inside packaging and found the knife at the bottom.

Mrs McCarron said: “It was horrible. We all just sat there in shock.

“It scared the life out of me. I have never seen anything like it before.”

The seemingly home-made knife consisted of a blade attached with tape to a piece of cardboard.

Mrs McCarron added: “I don’t understand why such a big store is using tools like that and how it managed to get into the box undetected”

Ms Wild said: “I felt guilty buying it. Think what could have happened. Children’s safety is paramount.”

She took the packaging and knife back to the store on December 28 and spoke to the manager.

She said: “He was genuinely stunned and agreed that it was terrible.”

He offered to refund her money but she refused and the manager said he would inform the company’s head office.

Ms Wild said she wanted an explanation and a guarantee that it would not happen to anyone else.

A spokeswoman for Poundstretcher said strict quality control procedures were in place.

She added: “This matter is being investigated internally, along with the toy manufacturer and supplier, and we will be reviewing our packaging processes immediately to avoid any similar future occurrences and to find out how exactly this breach occurred.

“We apologise for any distress caused.”
