Hungry, drunk and stupid thief jailed by Carlisle court

A serial thief who admitted stealing food from local shops only after being shown CCTV images of his crimes told police officers: “I was hungry, drunk and stupid.”

District judge Gerald Chalk jailed Carlisle man Kevin Docherty, 34, after he admitted carrying out four shoplifting offences in the space of five days.

The first theft, when he stole food and drink from the Co-op Store in Dalston was on January 11; he targeted the store again two days later, taking meat worth £73.

He stole from Spar shops in Brampton and Carlisle on January 14 and 15, on the last occasion taking goods worth £89, Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutor Adrienne Harris told how Docherty, from Eldon Drive, Harraby, was frank with police once they showed him the CCTV images of him in action.

He went on to tell them: “When I’m drunk I do silly things. I’m sorry and I’ll pay for any items.”

Miss Harris described how in the January 15 theft Docherty targeted the Spar shop at Petteril Bank, Carlisle.

Staff saw him piling goods – including nappies and meat products – into a bag and then leave the store without attempting to pay.

John Smith, defending, told the court that Docherty usually lives in Essex but he was born in Carlisle and still has friends and family here.

He said: “In December he came up here to see family and friends over Christmas.

“He didn’t get the money owed [in benefits] that he should have got.”

Mr Smith said Docherty, who also admitted illegally possessing a prescription drug and failing to surrender to the court, was currently on a course of the heroin substitute drug methadone.

Jailing him for 56 days, Mr Chalk said: “This was a series of offences on a regular daily basis, doing it while drunk or in connection with drugs.”
