Two seriously ill kittens dumped and left to die by the roadside are looking for a new home for Christmas.

The friendly six-week-old kittens, named Gideon and Clancy by animal charity workers, were in danger of losing their sight.

They were spotted by the roadside in Dalston by a passer-by who was shocked at their horrific eye injuries.

She rushed the cats to the nearest vets, Paragon in Dalston, where they were given pain relief and emergency care. As the kittens had been abandoned, Paragon vets contacted the Blue Cross pet charity to see if they could help.

Michelle Smith, Blue Cross regional foster co-ordinator said: “These poor kittens were in a terrible state and obviously in a lot pain.

“Both needed to have an eye removed and poor little Gideon was also in danger of losing his other eye without further surgery.

“We immediately stepped in and they are now recovering safely in our foster care. Although they only have a pair of eyes between them, they are doing really well and are just like any other cheeky, playful kittens. They’ve had a terrible ordeal and now we just want them to see in the New Year in a loving home.”

The kittens’ eye damage is likely to have developed following a bout of cat flu which, if left untreated, can cause more serious problems.

Michelle added: “It is so important to contact your vet if you think your pet may be ill. Never just ignore symptoms because some health problems may be serious, and even life-threatening.”
