The boss of one of Cumbria’s biggest garden centres has been jailed for concocting a story in an attempt to get out of a drink-driving charge.

Thomas Richard Hayes, 45, director of Hayes Garden World of Ambleside, colluded with 57-year-old odd job man Derek Henderson over who was driving a luxury Porsche when it crashed near Kendal nearly two years ago.

They claimed Henderson had been driving, when in fact it had been Hayes.

The two men pleaded not guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to conspiring to pervert the course of justice but were found guilty yesterday after a five-day trial.

Hayes, of Crook Road, Kendal, was sent to prison for 18 months.

Henderson, from Woodbank Terrace, Endmoor, got 12 months.

In 2012 Hayes was jailed for 18 weeks after being convicted of the original charges - careless driving and driving while four times the drink-driving limit.
