Has Cumbrian woman's hen laid one of world's smallest eggs?

Karen James has made a cracking discovery – she thinks one of her hens has laid the world’s smallest egg.

The 52-year-old couldn’t believe her eyes when she was carrying out her daily egg-collecting routine and came across a tiny egg, not much bigger than a 20p piece.

Coincidentally she had just watched Northumberland man Paul Rae on the news the night before, claiming that he had found the smallest egg and was going to contact the Guinness Book of World Records.

But Karen thinks she could give him a run for his money with the one she found which measures just 2.5cm.

“I went down to the allotment to collect the eggs on Thursday morning and saw it – it is so tiny and cute,” she said.

“It looks like a little thrush egg, but I know it isn’t as it is the same colour as a hen’s.

“I have had the hens for four years, but have never seen anything like this before. I couldn’t believe it, I think my hens just want to be famous.”

Karen, who is secretary at St Bees Village School took the egg, along with a “normal”-sized one, into work to show her colleagues, who were all stunned at the size of the mini egg.

Strangely Karen doesn’t eat the eggs which the hens lay on her allotment at Seamill Lane, St Bees, as she doesn’t like the taste. Instead, she uses them when she bakes and gives them away to friends.

But she won’t be parting with this tiny egg.

Instead she plans to keep it as a memento.

“There must be a little yolk in there,” she said. “I was planning on pin-pricking it and keeping the egg, just for novelty value.

“It’s just amazing and I really can’t believe it.”

Karen doesn’t know which one of her hens laid the spectacular egg. Whether it was Gladys, Annie or Lizzie, she’ll never know. But one thing’s for certain – she can rule Marvin the cockerel out of the running!

Have your say

Eggsceptional! It would only make a tiny cake for your wonderful step daughter!!!! You should maybe think about SHELLING it on E bay.
