Tommy Mattinson proved his ugly mettle, as he took the World Gurning Championship title for the 15th time.
Tommy’s gurn impressed the Egremont Crab Fair judges and he said he was “thrilled to bits” to once again be crowned champ.
The two-day event began with Pop Idol star Gareth Gates singing to 3,000 people on Main Street.
Daniel Shutt, one of the organisers was delighted with Friday night’s concert. He said: “It’s been a marvellous weekend.
“This year there was double the amount of people compared to last year’s music performance; Gareth was a real crowd puller.”
And after Saturday’s traditional activities such as apple-throwing, animal shows and vintage car exhibitions finished, the crowds headed to the Market Hall to watch the world-famous gurning competitions, where Devon Maxwell took his second victory in the junior face pulling competition.
The women’s event had 14 entrants with contestants travelling from as far as Florida and Melbourne to enter, but it was Claire Spedding, 26, from Egremont, who won.
The mum-of-two said: “It’s official – I’m the ugliest woman in the world.
“I can’t believe I’ve won, I only entered as a joke.”
Twenty-two others entered the men’s competition all with the hope of knocking Tommy off the top spot, but he managed to hold on to his title for the 15th year.
After the competition, he said: “ I’m very happy, absolutely thrilled to bits to have won.
“Even though I have won before it’s still an honour and a privilege to be chosen as world champion again.
“I grew up with gurning competitions, it’s in my blood.
“I still enjoy doing it and I will definitely be back next year to defend my title once more.”
Daniel said the Crab Fair weekend had run smoothly. He added: “There has been no trouble over the weekend, everyone has just come to enjoy themselves which is how it should be.”
