Group brush up on their techniques

Castles, owls, street art, dancing couples and landscapes could be spotted at an art exhibition. Members of the Carlisle and Border Art Society organised the show at St James’ Church, Denton Holme, to showcase their latest works.

Each artist in the group who wanted to enter their work had to produce at least three original paintings that would be on show to the public.

The result was a huge array of art with different techniques, styles, subjects and colours.

Artist Mary Walby, of Stanwix, Carlisle, began painting properly four years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

She said: “I find it quite relaxing and everybody in the group appreciates everyone else’s work.

“It’s great because art is something you can have set up and do a little at a time.

“You can come back to it and see mistakes you have made.

“My goal is to be improving all the time,” she added.

The group was formed in 1947 and has members from across Cumbria and southern Scotland.

They meet weekly to have a chat and get down to work on their chosen projects.

They hold events as a way to raise money that goes back into the group.

Group chairman Dave Goodfellow said: “These exhibitions are a chance for us to show off our work.

“The idea is for people to come along and enjoy it.

“This is a lovely place to come.”

Although Mr Goodfellow is pleased with the popularity of the art group, he admits the average age is a little high. “The youngest member of the group is about 30”, he said.

“We could do with some younger ones.”
