Ground fears force cancellation of Keswick Show

Organisers have cancelled one of Cumbria’s longest-established agricultural shows for this year.
Keswick Show had been due to take place in its traditional slot on the Bank Holiday Monday on August 27.
But its committee this week took the difficult decision to call it off because of concerns about the state of the showfield and fears that holding the show could worsen its condition.
Crossings Field on the western approach to the town is one of the sites where United Utilities has been working as part of a £23m sewerage system upgrade in Keswick.
Pipe-laying work has taken place on the showfield.
Show organisers say that the state of the land following that means they would not have had the space they would have liked to stage the event.
Although a smaller show could have been staged, lack of access to a toilet block and storage area would have caused problems.
The cancellation decision was made at an extraordinary committee meeting this week. And it was followed by a pledge that the event would return next year with added impetus.
Keswick Agricultural Society chairman Martyn Mawson said: “We’re all dreadfully disappointed.
“We are already starting to plan for 2013 when the show will be back better than ever and by which time the works in the field should have been completed and the field had a winter to recover.”
Schedules for the event had not yet been sent out.
Mr Mawson thanked people and businesses in Keswick for their support.
Keswick Show, founded in 1860, has been dogged by weather problems in recent years, forcing a number of cancellations.
United Utilities said it was “saddened and surprised” to hear the show had been cancelled. Spokeswoman Polly Rourke added: “We have always been working towards handing the field back to the organisers so that it could go ahead and we will talk to show organisers as a matter of urgency to fully understand their decision.”
