A popular former soap actor has explored the gastronomic heritage of Cumbria and north Lancashire through a new television programme and book.
Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt on ITV’s Coronation Street, said that behind the scenes of the soap he always had a love of cooking.
After leaving Corrie, Sean started creating his own recipes for black puddings, reworking pork pies and producing his own piccalilli. He has also become a cheese maker of distinction, collecting a gold medal at the World Cheese Awards in 2011.
His new television programme, The Great Northern Cookbook, allowed him to introduce viewers to some of his beloved northern recipes, while at the same time giving him the chance to meet many of the communities from which the dishes originate.
Each episode, one of which features Broughton-in-Furness and the Cartmel Village Shop, will see him follow centuries-old recipes without a modern gadget in sight, and replicate the best local dishes.
The Great Northern Cookbook programme started on Channel 5 this week and the book will be available from Thursday.
