A doctor has confirmed he is leaving his Brampton surgery – 30 years after he first walked through the doors.

Dr Peter Weaving will leave his role as senior partner within Brampton Medical Practice at the end of March.

He told the News & Star that he could no longer manage the workload alongside his new role as GP clinical director for North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, which covers the infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital, in Whitehaven.

The position is a new one for the trust, and will allow Dr Weaving to act as ‘middle man’ and address issues between the hospital trust and GPs.

“Brampton is a 1,500-patient dispensing practice, one of the largest in the country,” he explained. “It is quite a big set-up and, being a senior partner, while we run very democratically, there is a certain amount of work that goes with the role.

“I’m struggling to keep up with that work alongside the work required by my new role.”

The decision to leave was not taken lightly, and Dr Weaving admitted he will be sad to go.

He said: “I was sorting out my desk and going through letters and almost mementoes of experiences over the past 30 years, and it is surprising how emotional that can be.

“I did my first spell in Brampton in 1983, was on vocational training between ‘83 and ‘86, and was back as a partner in 1986.

“I remember some of my patients as babies, and now some of them are bringing me their children to look after.”

Dr Weaving is not giving up general practice though, as he has confirmed he will take on the role of partner within Stanwix Medical Practice, in Carlisle.

“I am really looking forward to Stanwix, as it will be great to take on new challenges,” he continued.

“I am really enjoying my new role with the acute trust as well. I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen so far.”
