A charity football match in honour of anyone who has lost someone close to them in sudden or tragic circumstances has been hailed as a success.

The fundraising friendly saw an under-18 football team from Denton Holme in Carlisle beat fitness instructors from The Sands Centre 4-1 at the Sheepmount Stadium.

The proceeds from the event will be split between the Great North Air Ambulance and Eden Valley Hospice.

It was organised by Joanna Bedwell, 38, of Richardson Street in Denton Holme.

She said: “I don’t know how much we have raised yet because all the sponsorship money has still to come in.

“It was an entertaining football match and the weather was amazing.

“I would like to do something like this again.”

More than 50 people turned out to watch the match yesterday.

Ms Bedwell organised the match for anyone who has lost anyone in a tragedy or to a terminal illness.

Her niece, Jessica Lakin, was killed in a car accident on the A595 near Carlisle in December 2010 along with her friend Grace Simpson.

The 19-year-old beauty therapists had been driving to work at the Armathwaite Hall Hotel, Bassenthwaite, when their car careered out of control into the path of a lorry on an icy road.

She also organised a fundraiser at The Sands Centre after the match.
