He was picked up in Merseyside at 4.40am this morning by officers working on behalf of Cumbria Police.

Police are also applying for an extension to question three other men who were arrested on suspicion of robbery following the attack.

These initial three suspects – a 25-year-old and 23-year-old from Liverpool, plus a 23-year-old of no fixed address – remained in police custody this morning but had not been charged.

The attack saw golf club-wielding raiders, wearing Hallowe’en masks, attack the driver of a cash van in Central Avenue, Harraby, at around 8.55am.

The extent of his injuries have not been revealed but it is not thought that he was seriously harmed.

The raiders, who were wearing blue and grey ghost masks, fled the scene in a blue Vauxhall Zafira then changed cars and made off in a white Audi across the city towards the A595 route to west Cumbria.

Eyewitnesses reported a high-speed chase along Eastern Way and London Road, as well as seeing around six police cars in Dalston Road.

Police confirmed this morning that they are still looking for at least one more suspect they believe may have been involved.

They are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to call Carlisle police on 0845 33 00 247.
