A rock legend who has performed alongside Queen's Brian May will be on stage in a well-known Workington pub

Uli Jon Roth, the former lead guitarist for the Scorpions and one of their main songwriters, will be in The Vine Bar for a gig on Thursday, November 1.

The German-born rocker is widely recognised as one of the most influential neo-classical guitar players in the world.

Earlier this month Uli performed alongside Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Ian Paice (Deep Purple), Brian May (Queen), Alice Cooper, and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to playing in Workington. It’s one of the few places I haven’t been to and I’m a bit of a traveller.

“We will do our best, as we always do, to make it a worthwhile evening.

“At the moment we tend to play pretty long sets, including some of my present stuff, some Scorpions classics and some of my Electric Sun music. There will be some recent stuff and some Jimi Hendrixcovers.”

Roth invented the six-octave Sky Guitar which helped revolutionise the genre and also founded the Sky Academy.

The last time he came to Cumbria was in 1976 for a gig in Kendal when he was in the Scorpions.

His agent Dennis Eyre said he was keen to do more intimate gigs which are affordable for his fans.

He said Uli would mingle with fans after the gig and that their would be opportunities for photographs.

Roth's band will be supported by local group Zero, who will be on stage from 7pm.

Tickets will cost £10.

Sandra McCallam, bar manager at The Grapes and The Vine Bar, said: “It’s massive and they got in touch with us! It’s everything for live music in the town to have a legend like that. He’s one of the great guitarists of rock.”
