Beach bums can now own a slice of sand on West Cumbria’s famous energy coastline.
Two stretches of beach are to come under the hammer in what is believed to be the UK’s first public auction of foreshore.
The extensive beach land at Flimby and Lowca forms part of a sale by Carlisle-based Chartered Surveyors, H&H Land and Property on behalf of the Curwen Estate in Workington.
The sale is so unique Harrison & Hetherington have attached no guide price.
“We are going to let the market set the price in this instance,” said sales agent Matthew Bell.
The plots offer developers a chance to use the land in a variety of ways including becoming involved in renewable energy. The Curwens were one of the oldest families in England and were Lords of the Major in Workington. The two foreshore lots are part of a Collective Property Sale being held next month. Included in the sale are:
- 173.64 hectares of Cumbrian foreshore, incorporating:
- 50.89 hectares on the Lowca Foreshore;
- 122.75 hectares on the nearby Flimby Foreshore;
- 4205m2 of land located in residential area with development potential;
- Three substations;
- 0.78 hectares of woodland.
“This is a very diverse sale and certainly offers sites with potential for development,”said Mr Bell.
Both foreshore lots will offer a new owner a variety of uses and income streams as well as their own beach to enjoy.”
He added: “The foreshores in particular offer exciting ways to add value to the land, offering sites for renewable energy and potential offshore connections to the power grid.”
A number of the other lots, said Mr Bell, offer the opportunity for development mainly in residential areas.
“This property is quite diverse. In addition to the foreshores, substations and woodland, which itself is a parcel of mature woodland that would suit a variety of uses subject to relevant consent, the remaining property comprises side street lots, a garden plot, a parking area, and a garage site.
The sale on behalf of the Curwen Estate & Others will be held on Wednesday, April 17 at 6.30pm at Washington Central Hotel in Workington.

all West Cumbrian beaches are contaminated with radioactive particles from Sellafield ...are the land agents informing prospective buyers that they may be liable? The nuclear industry (government) is keen to offload its contaminated beaches all of a sudden.

Any part of our coast still in its natural state is precious and should be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. It is the duty of all public representatives to protect what is still unspoilt.
