Emma Goodridge, 39, of Forest Head, near Brampton, was found dead in a burned-out Volvo estate late on Wednesday night.
The car was found at the side of a minor road that runs between Talkin and Forest Head just after 10pm on Wednesday night.
The road had to be closed for several hours as police accident investigators searched for clues.
Mrs Goodridge lived at Whinney Fell, just outside the tiny hamlet of Forest Head, with her husband Warren. He told the News & Star yesterday that he was too upset to talk about the tragedy.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who travelled along that road on Wednesday night.
Police and firefighters called to the scene found the burned-out car. They say damage to a nearby wall was not there on Wednesday morning.
Officers said that when emergency services had been called out, the car was smouldering, but had burned itself out. They believe it would have been burning for a couple of hours. Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 33 00 247.
