Clean up underway after floods across west Cumbria

A mopping up operation is underway today after torrential rain caused chaos across west Cumbria.

Have your say

i have been flooded a number of times and getting totally fed up with it. Our problem is the local beck, the pipe work for it is all different sizes and the drains join up to the beck. When we have had these heavy rains the beck has filled really quick, the drains couldnt cope and back up and we get flooded. As usual and like most other things there is no funding for it, so it is us as householders that have to pay. I own my own home and have had very little help etc, but for the sake of my kids we are trying to find different ways to stop the water from getting into my house. I know it is gonna take a few years before something is eventually done, but do think the council should help support us to prevent the flooding till the appropriate funding is available.

Hate to disappoint you all, but the only factor to blame is mother nature - too much rain simply fell down in too little time! And then it surged downwards - nothing to do with the drains, there was nothing that could be done. I know it must be awful to be flooded but in these cases there is no singular human to blame I'm afraid.

I couldn't agree more! It's the age old thing I pay my taxes so why should I clean the drains out! Well unfortunately cuts are made to council funding every year (well except to those in high places wages!) what's wrong with clearing a bit of rubbish from the drain outside your house especially if it prevents your home being flooded. It annoys me were all to keen to blame everyone else! we have the same complaints when the snow and ice comes I remember the commotion last time that paths were not being gritted but if everyone cleared there own part of the pavement outside their property problem solved! We live in a society now that expects everything done for them, we should be so lucky!
Oh and just for the record I don't blame the council I blame the government funding cuts, if less time was spent sending money abroad, MP's expenses, bailing countries out and supporting people who won't work maybe the country could be in a better financial position.
We only have ourselves to blame after all we voted the last idiots in! Stop complaining and do something about it

i also agree with claire , every drain along victoria road in whitehaven ccvered with twigs and leavesand water just flowig round them if every one with a drain out side there property would just take a shovel and lift the leaves off the drain it might help to save the people futher down the hill a lot of heart ache and expense yes i agree they should not have to we all pay taxes etc but as there is now no money left to pay road sweepers and the like we are all responsible ,

I drop my child off at the nursery at seaton. The drains are blocked with leaves, thus making it near on impossible for water to drain away. Now when I looked at each garden along the road (detached houses) all had trees. How much effort would it be for the householder to come out and clean up the leaves(probably from their own trees).

I agree with you Me, there must be something in what you say. Think of all the concrete filling the ground where the perishers are planted, obviously the rainwater has less places to drain. Makes perfect sense to get rid of them, after all the things don't work properly, and whats all this rubbish about switching them off when the wind is too strong? Duh, am I missing something?

Will be interesting to see what level the people in charge of Whitehaven dock gates held the water at in the harbour which is supposed to be kept at a low level to allow Pow beck to Drain away and not flood the town centre at times of high tides and heavey rain…………..

you will here thies words again Flood defences lets build more and waste more money all this does is move the problem on it does not get rid of it they need to dredge the rivers shure up the river banks with the silt they take out of the bottom then do the drainige ditches but they will never learn

Have you noticed there has been an increase in the exceptional levels of rain since the number of wind turbines has increased. The more turbines the more flooding - so I blame those with a green agenda for causing all these floods.

Thought I'd get that in before the green brigade start again ;-)
