Fixed penalty notice for man arrested in 'gunshots' drama

A man has been given a fixed penalty notice for throwing a firework in a public place.

The £90 'fine' follows a police investigation into reports that gunshots had been heard in the Harras Moor area of Whitehaven last night.

Four local men - aged 26, 22, 22 and 20 - were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after armed police stopped a car at Mirehouse Road.

A statement last night said officers were looking into information that fireworks - and not a weapon - were responsible for the loud bangs.

They said today that a 22-year-old had been handed the notice for throwing the firework.

No further action is to be taken against the others.

Detective Sergeant Catherine Vargas said: “Following a thorough investigation we can confirm that no firearm was recovered and police were able to establish no firearm had been discharged.”
