Bosses at a Hexham-based furniture business are considering buying the landmark Carlisle store Chapmans.
The Victoria Viaduct store sold furniture in the city for 165 years but its doors closed last month. There have been persistent rumours that a new owner was poised to move in.
Tace Traviss, from the family-run Dickinsons furniture, flooring and interiors retailer, confirmed that the firm has looked at the Carlisle store but added: “It’s still something we’re looking into but no decisions have been made.”
Established in Northumberland in 1878, Dickinsons claims to have the largest interior design studios in the north of England.
