Police arrest two men after blaze at block of flats

Two men have been arrested after a mother and daughter were pulled from a flat as fire raged below them.

The men, aged 30 and 35 and from Whitehaven, have been arrested on suspicion of arson with the intent to endanger life.

The mum and daughter, aged 46 and 19, were trapped on the second floor of the three-storey building at Birley Court, Whitehaven, when the blaze took hold on the first floor.

Three fire engines - one from Whitehaven, one from Workington and one from Egremont - were called to the scene at about 8.25pm yesterday.

Four firefighters wearing breathing equipment carried out what was described as a search and rescue operation.

Other crew members tackled the blaze.

The two women were taken to hospital by ambulance. They were uninjured.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to call 101.
