Charlie Hunnam, 33, who lived in Melmerby, near Penrith, and attended Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, was originally cast as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of the EL James book.

Universal announced that the actor will depart the project in a “mutual decision” because his preparation time is limited by his television schedule.

The Newcastle-born actor, who stars in the series Sons of Anarchy, described Penrith as “just about the worst place you could hope to live” and a “nightmare.”

The character is a wealthy entrepreneur who begins a sadomasochistic relationship with a college student called Anastasia Steele.

Steele will be played by 23-year-old Dakota Johnson, and a replacement for Hunnam is being sought.
