Family's heartache after Carlisle hotel goes into receivership

A family face losing everything after the hotel they ran for more than 40 years has gone on the market.

Have your say

Very sorry to hear the news. I've never stayed at the Cumbria Park Hotel but I ahve attended many receptions and get togethers there. Lovely venue, great staff and welcoming environment.

A sad loss in these difficult times.

After reading the comments of Ian H wonder if he has ever run a business. He should remember that the Lowther family created those jobs and have provided employment and training for people in Carlisle for the last 50 years.
During that time they have no doubt gone through some rough times and I would imagine
on occasions paid the staff but have been unable to pay themselves.Unlike the staff there will be no big redundancy payment for them.Without people like the Lowthers there
would few jobs for anyone.I've stayed at the
hotel several times and found it provided an excellent service and I'm sorry to hear of it's predicament.I wish the Lowther family
all the best in the future.

If the hotel changes hands, thats ok so jobs are kept. Those jobs are more important than who owns the hotel. Lots and lots of people up and down the country and indeed the world are going through hard times and i'm sure the owners won't have it as hard as others who can't simply downsize home etc...some people are actually homeless. Businesses and their owners either adapt to the current financial climate or fold. Other Businesses still survive because they plan for all eventualities. When banks are throwing money at you it doesn't mean you have to go and accept it without knowing how to pay it in times of financial hardship, what kind of business sense is that?

I moved to carlisle about 25 years ago to take up the position of accountant with a local business. Whilst trying to sell my house in Wigan my new employers paid for my six month stay in the cumbria park hotel. What fantastic memories i have of my stay there. I remember one brother assisted with the management and the other was the chef. The rooms and food were excellent. I really am saddened to hear what as now happened. If there is anything i can do to help you only have to ask.

A real shame, the family has obviously put their life into this business but a lot of people seem to prefer plastic hotels like the Premier Inn and Travel Lodge chains and not somewhere with a personal touch.

This recession is now hitting many many local businesses that have taken years,if not generations, to build up.Some have become 'zombies' with their owners simply working for the banks with little chance of ever getting out of their financial mess. The banks who once enticed us all with their loans-now make it so difficult to escape their clutches.....

If you can't pay the bills then what option do the bank have?

My family and I will certainly miss the Cumbria Park Hotel for many many years I have visited there occasional Sundays always excellent service and food and at reasonable cost. I wish the family good luck.
