Fuel has been spilled into a beck in Carlisle.

A small amount of diesel was been found in Durranhill Beck with many residents reporting that the pollution was giving off “strong fumes”.

One local resident told the News & Star: “Last night it wasn't even possible to go outside without getting a headache because of all the fumes.”

The Environment Agency is aware of the situation.

A spokesman for the organisation said: “We are currently investigating an incident of minor pollution in the Durranhill Beck watercourse that appears to be a spill of diesel. “Although the pollution impact is small at present we recognise the unpleasant diesel odours are a concern for local residents.

"We are therefore working closely with Carlisle City Council to identify the source and prevent the pollution from getting any worse. We will continue this work over the weekend if necessary."

A city council spokeswoman confirmed the authority’s staff were helping with the clean up.
