Environment Agency cleans up fuel spill in Carlisle beck

Staff from the Environment Agency worked through the weekend to clean up a fuel spill but the pollution is still lingering.
The workers cleared up an oil spillage in Durranhill Beck, Carlisle, after first becoming aware of it on Friday evening.
A spokesman for the organisation said they had worked until 10pm that night and resumed the following morning. The oil came from a leaking heater in a property.
“The leak has been stopped but there is still a considerable amount of oil in the drainage system,” he added. Because of this, residents may still be able to smell the liquid.
Oil booms, which soak up the fluid, will be left in place until all of it has been removed.
Environment Agency staff will also be seen on the streets until the clean-up is complete.
The spokesman advised people with oil-fired heaters to check they are not leaking.
He added that there was no risk of major contamination to the Eden, into which the beck flows.
The spokesman added that there was no serious risk to the public but that it was standard practice to advise people to stay away from the affected area.
Anyone with any concerns can contact the Environment Agency on 0800 807060.
