Elderly man cut free from car after crash near Carlisle

A major route into Carlisle was closed after a crash with left an elderly man needing hospital treatment.

The collision happened at 7.50pm yesterday, at the Durdar crossroads.

A BMW 318 car was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Corsa, which left one man trapped in his vehicle.

Firefighters cut the 89-year-old man free from the BMW using specialist equipment.

Ambulance crews initially checked him over at the scene before he was taken by land ambulance to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary with minor injuries.

The Corsa driver, a 56-year-old woman, was uninjured.

The road was initially closed, causing traffic problems for people attending last night’s horse racing.

Motorists were diverted through Ivegill or the city centre.
