Carlisle and Brampton are set for an economic boost when the Roger Albert Clark Rally roars into action later this month.

The rally, named in honour of the former RAC Rally champion driver, takes place over three days from November 23 to 25.

It starts on Friday, November 23 from Ryedale in North Yorkshire.

The rally then moves north on the Saturday and takes in Duncombe Park, Croft, Hamsterley and Pundershaw before an overnight stay in Carlisle, finishing the day at the H&H Borderway Mart and Exhibition Centre.

Sunday sees the rally tearing through villages and towns including Newcastleton, Hawick, Wauchope and Kershope before a ceremonial champagne spraying finish in Brampton at about 4.45pm.

The event is likely to attract thousands of spectators and provide a boost to the city’s hotels and restaurants.

Carlisle City Council deputy leader Colin Glover and economic spokesman said: “We always welcome events like this into the city and this one has attracted our attention for a long time.

“We are very pleased that the rally organisers continue to use Carlisle as a base. This year they are finishing the event in Brampton which is great as we feel there is a need to support the market towns and it’s great that they can be involved.

“In terms of wider economic development it’s good news for the city’s hotels, bed and breakfasts and restaurants. When people are here they need to eat so they give trade to our restaurants and they do their shopping here.”

Now in its ninth year, the Roger Albert Clark Rally relives the 1960s-1970s era with a competition aimed at amateur competitors.

A prize giving will be held on the Sunday night at H&H at Rosehill.
