A mother has admitted being drunk in charge of a five-year-old.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given an 18-month conditional discharge when she appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court. She also pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour.
Adrienne Harris, prosecuting, said that on April 10 police were alerted by a passer-by who had seen the woman drunk on West Road in Wigton with a child.
Officers arrived to find her swaying and smelling of alcohol. During questioning she became abusive with the police officers.
Tim Frost, defending, said the woman was highly embarrassed to be in court. She had been seeking help as an alcoholic but on the day in question “succumbed to temptation”.
She has to pay a contribution to court costs of £50.
