Drunken Carlisle man hit and spat in face of pregnant girlfriend

A man has been tagged after admitting slapping his pregnant girlfriend in the face.

Peter Doran, 38, of Millholme Avenue, Currock, Carlisle, pleaded guilty to one charge of assault in which he twice spat in the woman’s face, before slapping her.

Prosecutor Pamela Fee told Carlisle Magistrates’ Court that onlookers were shocked at the assault on a vulnerable victim, which took place on Sunday July 20.

Doran had been drinking in the city with friends, and phoned his partner – who is six months pregnant with his child – about his lost keys.

When he realised she was not home, he began entering pubs in Botchergate, looking for her.

Helen Wallace, defending, said Doran was concerned that the woman was drinking while expecting their first child. He eventually found her near the Church nightclub, the court heard, and they argued.

Doran spat in her face a couple of times, and smacked her on the face once. He then ran away towards the cinema where he was arrested.

Ms Wallace told the court the couple have been together for more than two years and this will be their first child.

She said Doran admitted he was drunk and is ashamed of his actions.

The court heard the incident only lasted 45 seconds and that Doran is now receiving counselling for his drinking. Ms Wallace added that her client is looking forward to becoming a dad in October.

Doran was electronically tagged for 16 weeks to ensure he complies with a house curfew between the hours of 6pm and 6am.

He was given court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £60.
