Drunken Carlisle man broke into garage, court told

A man who broke into a garage and stole tools from a van in Carlisle while he was drunk has been sentenced to a suspended prison sentence.

Brian Brand, 33, of Blackwell Close, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft at the city’s crown court.

The court heard that Brand had stolen golf clubs from a garage on Bewcastle Close on May 26 and also smashed the window of a works van parked in Rosebery Road in Stanwix and stolen a Makita drill kit and another drill.

Police arrested Brand and found the items at his home.

Anthony Wilson, defending Brand, said: “My client can’t remember very much about it.

“He had been out drinking with friends but had declined to take drugs.”

A separate offence of the theft of a satellite navigation system from a car on Lowry Hill Road was also taken into consideration.

Judge Barbara Forrester told Brand he had a “dreadful record”.

She imposed a 12 month community order with a supervision and drug rehabilitation requirement suspended for two years.

She also ordered Brand to pay £78 for the smashed window.
