Drug man sick of jail, Carlisle court told

A man caught with illegal drugs in his bed has pleaded with a court not to be sent back to prison.

“He is sick of jail and sick of drugs because they are what land him back there,” Mark Wilkinson’s barrister Marion Weir told a judge at Carlisle Crown Court.

“He has spent quite enough time not seeing his daughter grow up.”

Wilkinson, 29, was arrested in May after a police raid on his house in The Arches, Maryport.

He said he had bought the drugs – amphetamines and a small amount of heroin – the day before after going back on a pledge to give them up.

“He had dabbled with drugs for a significant period of time but was trying to give them up,” said Ms Weir.

“These offences were simply a lapse.”

Wilkinson, who had previous convictions for drugs offences, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply.

Wilkinson was remanded in custody for background reports and assessment to see if he would benefit from drugs rehabilitation.

He will be sentenced on August 28.
