Top racehorse trainer Nicky Richards has been banned from driving after being clocked speeding at 100mph.

The 56-year-old was caught going 30mph above the speed limit on a dual-carriageway stretch of the A66 Appleby bypass at Cross Croft.

At Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, Richards, of Rectory Farm, Greystoke, pleaded guilty to speeding in his Mercedes car on June 8.

He already had six points on his driving licence.

Jayne La-Grue, for Richards, told the magistrates that a lengthy driving ban would affect him, his business and staff.

She said he needed his driving licence to run his horse-training enterprise – travelling to race meetings, buying and selling horses and taking horses to the vet.

Mary McArdle, chairman of the bench, told Richards the speed was “very, very high”.

He was banned from the roads for 28 days, must pay an £85 fine, prosecution costs of £50 and a £15 victim surcharge.
