Drivers on new Carlisle 'bypass' don't know how to use roundabouts - claim

Motorists are getting themselves in a spin over how to handle the roundabouts on Carlisle’s new western 'bypass', it has emerged.

Have your say

Well done ladies, superb article and video. I have driven the new bypass route several times now and use the 12 o'clock rule as taught by my driving instructor some years ago. Its simple and easy to remember but unfortunately a lot of drivers dont seem to have a clue it would be a shame for such a fantastic local improvement to be marred by accidents caused by peoples ignorance. I hope your campaign gets the message across! Good Luck!

I always thought you learned how to use a roundabout when you learned to drive or do instructors and testers not bother now.

I'm glad this has been highlighted as it won't be long before there is an accident. I know we don't have many roundabouts in Carlisle, but surely common sense would tell you, you don't always go around a roundabout in the left hand lane!!

Poor signage is also to blame. Maybe paint arrows on the road prior to roundabouts. For instance. Left hand lane for exits 1 & 2 right hand lane for exits 3 & 4. I use this road every day and every day I either get someone overtaking me on a roundabout or get cut up my someone taking the 'racing line' it seems only hgv drivers who travel further than the local area know how to handle simple roundabouts

Total rubbish, and a complete publicity stunt to advertise their business!!!! We have lots of roundabouts in Carlisle, why do we suddenly not know how to use these ones. Yes people drive badly but these are the same halfwits who stubbornly ignore road markings at Hardwicke Circus and switch lanes.

Seriously? Aww come on, people who live in Carlisle, don't just stay in the City. We do go to other Citys where there are roundabouts you know. Not to mention the roundabouts on the M6 junctions (if we dare to venture that far out of course!!)

Does the disappearance of traditional local pubs worry you?

No. I drink at home these days

Yes. A closed pub signals a fractured community

They're not what they were - the smoking ban killed them
