Driver badly hurt when car overturned had been drinking - court
Last updated at 13:32, Saturday, 29 September 2012
A driver found badly injured in his upturned car on a west Cumbrian road admitted drink-driving.
Another motorist came around a corner and found Martin Muncaster trapped in his badly damaged Mazda after he lost control and crashed into a tree at Sandwith, near Whitehaven, on April 15.
He was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital where, even two hours after the accident, the alcohol in his blood was twice the limit.
At Carlisle Crown Court, Muncaster, from Cleator Moor but now living in a caravan at Seacote, admitted drink driving.
He insisted on conducting his defence by himself.
The judge, Recorder Simon Medland QC, asked him: “What on earth were you doing driving when that drunk?”
Muncaster replied: “There was no reason for it.”
Muncaster, a £3,000-a-month Sellafield worker, was given a three-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, and banned for three years. He was fined £400, put under probation supervision for a year with a £15 victim surcharge.
