Dog hailed after Carlisle fire

A dog is being hailed a hero for alerting its owner to a fire.

The blaze broke out in the living room of a property in Pennine Way, Harraby, Carlisle, at about 5.45pm on Saturday.

Firefighters from Carlisle east and west stations entered the house wearing breathing apparatus to put out the fire.

A spokesman said: “Fortunately the house had working smoke alarms, which had previously been fitted by Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service. The woman inside the house was asleep on the sofa, and her dog woke her up.”

The cause of the blaze is being investigated, but it is understood something fell onto the woman’s fire.

Firefighters are reminding the public that anyone is eligible for a free home fire safety check. To arrange one call Carlisle east fire station, 01228 221688, or Carlisle west, 01228 221622.
