A disabled man waged a solo protest after he believed his van was unfairly clamped.

Stephen Brady, 53, of Reeth Road, Morton West, Carlisle, is unable to drive himself as he is registered disabled because he has epilepsy, arthritis and only half a working heart.

He bought a van however after a friend agreed to drive him around when needed.

After collecting the vehicle, Mr Brady says he and his friend went to get it taxed – but when they returned to it, it had been clamped.

“They clamped it because it hadn’t been taxed,” he said. “It cost me about £20 in calls to try and sort it, and then they said they were going to come and tow it away the next day.”

Concerned that he was about to lose his new vehicle, Mr Brady vowed to sit in it and prevent it from being towed away.

“I was going to sit in it all night,” he insisted. “But my wife told me had to go in and take my heart medication.

“I came out immediately in the morning, and the man arrived to take my van soon after.”

After less than two hours sat inside his vehicle, the DVLA contractor agreed to remove the clamp and leave the van.

Dr Belinda Webb, speaking on behalf of the DVLA, said: “All vehicles used or kept on the public road must be taxed. If an untaxed vehicle is seen on the road it can be clamped by our contractors.

"Where a keeper feels their vehicle has been clamped unfairly we carefully consider the details of their case. Each case is treated on its merits and, while the action taken was correct, we have released the vehicle free of charge and are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
