Delays as car and HGV crash on north Cumbrian road

School buses were among motorists delayed after a crash near Dalston this morning.
A blue Scania Richard Bradford Transport wagon was involved in a collision with a dark grey Vauxhall Astra car on the B5299 Carlisle to Caldbeck road, south of the village.
The collision happened on a very sharp bend, just past the turn off towards Rose Castle. While not a major road, it was busy as people attempted to take children to school or to travel into Carlisle for work.
The road was blocked by the lorry and police positioned themselves on either side while they diverted vehicles around the crash.
One bus driver could be overheard asking police officers how long it would be shut, as she tried to establish whether to attempt to turn the bus full of children around.
Exact details of how the collision occurred, at just before 8am, are still unknown, but the lorry was left diagonally across the road. The front driver’s side bumper was damaged, with panelling lying on the grass.
The car was propelled onto the grass verge, with serious front damage – the bumper was ripped off and the air bags had been deployed.
A 40-year-old man suffered “minor injuries” and was taken by ambulance to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
