A deision on businessman Philip Day’s plans to build four holiday cottages on his Edmond Castle estate has been deferred to allow councillors to visit the site.

The three-bedroom cottages had attracted some objections from local residents but the application was recommended for approval by officers advising Carlisle City Council’s development control committee.

A video of the development site near Corby Hill was shown to the committee which heard that a number of trees would have to be felled.

The stone and slate cottages would be in Garden Walk, off the main entrance road and near a picturesque lake.

Councillor Ray Bloxham argued that a site visit was not required because the video had shown him all he needed to see.

A statement from Ashwood Design, acting for Mr Day’s company Hayton Construction, explained the holiday lets were part of a plan to ensure the long-term viability of the estate.

Councillor William Whalen said: “I’m amazed at the beauty of that area and I would rather we were much more careful about what we support.

“To ease my conscience, I’d rather have a good look at it.”

Committee chairman Terry Scarborough revealed he was uneasy about the application before taking a vote on the site visit.

Mr Day is chairman and chief executive of Edinburgh Woollen Mill.

Seven objections to the plans were raised by residents concerned about a detrimental impact on the area, an inappropriate scale and design and a loss of privacy.

The plans for sewage treatment from the terrace of cottages also prompted objections, although the Environment Agency had raised no concerns.
