Death of major in regiment

A FORMER major in the King’s Own Border Regiment has died at the age of 85.

Ralph May, who after retirement took the honorary rank of Colonel as commandant of Cumbria Army Cadet Force, passed away at his home outside Carlisle on Monday.

Col May was commissioned into the then Border Regiment in July 1948 and saw service in West Germany, Australia, Egypt, the Far East as well as in the UK.

He retired from the King’s Own Border Regiment in 1964.

Col May was later the curator of the Regimental Museum at Carlisle Castle, retiring from that role in 1992.

He lived at Warwick Bridge and is survived by family including his children and wife Bridget.

His funeral will take place at 2.30pm on Thursday at Our Lady and St Wilfrid’s Church, Warwick Bridge.
