Who are they? You know them the selfish people who, on the first nice day, are out there lighting their bonfires.

Just when you need your windows open on a sultry evening you are forced to close them or suffer the acrid smell in the bedrooms and the rest of the house.

Sometimes on a nice evening, after working all day, you decide to do some gardening but you are driven indoors or your clothes and hair will smell.

Is there any need for them to burn rubbish? No! You can compost garden waste and large branches from trees or bushes will be recycled along with newspapers and cardboard at the dumps run by Bexley Council.

You do not even have to compost grass . The council will do that too.

Have a thought for people with emphysema who suffer greatly if caught out by a lung full of smoke from someone's garden, as happened to my brother-in-law last year when he came to us for a barbeque. The smoke from a barbeque should be little, if done correctly, and, once cooking, there should be almost none.

We do not get that many good days to enjoy being in the garden, so why do the minority spoil it for the rest?

The councillor who bans bonfires between April to October will certainly get my vote, so how about it?
