Dealer nabbed by Cumbria police as he got off bus with drugs worth £20,000

A dealer who brought drugs into Workington five times in six weeks has been jailed for more than three years.

When police pounced on David Browne as he got off a bus in the town, he was found to have drugs worth £20,000.

Carlisle Crown Court heard how the 33-year-old was arrested the moment he arrived, carrying a holdall. Inside, was a bag with amphetamine worth £5,000.

Brown then became abusive as police officers tried to search him but he later apologised. The ensuing search revealed he was carrying a package of heroin with a street value of £16,000.

He later admitted to police that as well as that visit to Workington, he had come to the town with drugs on five occasions.

In court, Browne, from Pendwern Street, Liverpool, admitted two drugs offences – possessing both heroin and amphetamine with an intent to supply them to others.

Police later confirmed that he was carrying 164 grams of heroin and 500 grams of amphetamine when he was stopped on April 23.

He accepted that he had made similar trips to the town on March 30, and April 4, 9, and 18 for the same reason.

In mitigation, his defence lawyer told the court that Browne had begun dealing in the hard drugs concerned because he was trying to pay off his own substantial drugs debt to his supplier.

Police found the heroin in a packet that he had hidden down his trousers.

Passing sentence, Recorder Ainsworth told the defendant that his actions were effectively “spreading the misery” of hard drugs around the country from Liverpool. He noted that the defendant had visited Workington five times in the space of six weeks.

“You were in possession of a significant amount of heroin and amphetamine,” he said.

The judge imposed 40 months for Browne possessing heroin with intent; and eight months concurrently for the amphetamine offence.
