Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes told business delegates to “exceed your own vision” at a conference at Lillyhall, on Wednesday.

The former athletic champion and world record holder headlined the Sellafield Ltd Business Excellence Event.

Around 600 people attended the two-day conference at the Energus centre – which highlighted quality and competitiveness.

Dame Kelly, a former Army sergeant, spoke to the audience about the business of winning and how her drive and ambition can be translated into everyday working life.

She said: “I always had a passion to be as good as I could possibly be. I’ve now come to recognise the parallels between sport and business.

“Both see huge ups and downs but with experience you see better performance and knowledge. It is that rollercoaster journey that made me the person I am today.

“Sometimes you don’t take risks for fear of the outcome but I knew I could be a champion because of my determination and past experience.

“It’s not always an easy journey but getting closer to achieving a goal makes you hungrier for it and more focussed on tweaking things to get that bit further.”

She is now pursuing a new goal as a businesswoman and is in the middle of an advanced diploma in fitness training, alongside running her own company Double Gold and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

She added: “My next goal is to be named businesswoman of the year within the next five years, but I have a long way to go yet.”

The event, held in partnership with the Chartered Quality Institute and the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety, also featured Lord Robert Winston in a talk about health and safety.
