Cyclists take to road to launch Jennings Rivers Ride

More than 35 cyclists launched this year’s Jennings Rivers Ride by taking to the roads like professionals in the form of a peloton.
Some of the riders were wearing Tour de France-style yellow jerseys which they were given for raising more than £100 for Cumbria Community Foundation during last year’s event.
Andrew Beeforth, director of Cumbria Community Foundation, said: “This year will be a bit special because there’s a new route on offer.
“More than 1,000 riders joined us last year and they really enjoyed it. We’ve got four terrific cycle challenges for riders of all abilities this year on Sunday, September 15.”
Yesterday’s launch was held in Cockermouth, home of the main sponsor Jennings, but the event in September will start and finish in Keswick.
Cheryl Frost, director of Rather be Cycling, organises all the cycling-related logistics for the event.
She said: “We like to think this is the best charity road biking event in Cumbria with dedicated support from experienced local route marshalls and excellent help from volunteers. It’s a great event for the whole family.”
The Jennings Rivers Ride is held to raise money for the charitable work of Cumbria Community Foundation. t of community life.
It makes grants to local charities and people in need.
The grants help young and older people, those living with disabilities and those recovering from illness.
The entry fee covers the cost of staging the event and raises a small amount for the charity, while cyclists raise sponsorship.
Mr Beeforth said: “The yellow jersey idea really helped people think about raising money for Cumbria Community Foundation and last year more than 80 people raised more than £100, with some raising more than £500.
“This year the person who raises the most overall will see their face in cartoon form on a Jennings Rivers Ride guest ale in August and September 2014.”
