Cumbrian parades and services to mark Remembrance

Remembrance Sunday will be marked with a host of memorial events across the area this weekend.

Carlisle Mayor Bill Graham, accompanied by local dignitaries and city councillors, will leave the Old Town Hall at 9.45am, to arrive at Carlisle Cathedral for the Remembrance Service at 10am.

After the service, the procession will move to the cenotaph outside the town hall for a wreath-laying ceremony at 10.55am.

A second ceremony will take place at the cenotaph in Rickerby Park on Sunday at 2.30pm attended by the Mayor and his wife Mayoress Joan Graham, and Maggie Mooney, town clerk and chief executive.

In Workington the parade will start on Sunday from Pow Street at 2pm. It will go to Finkle Street, Vulcans Lane, and to the park, arriving at the cenotaph at 2.15pm.

There will be a service and a wreath-laying ceremony.

The parade will leave the park via Queen Street, along Corporation Road and halt at the town hall where mayor Bill Reville will take a salute.

The procession will continue to St John’s Church for a service at 3pm.

In Maryport a parade will leave Flemming Square at 2.30pm.

It will proceed to St Mary’s Church for a service. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place across the road at the Memorial Gardens.

In Cockermouth the parade will assemble at Fairfield Car Park at 1.45pm.

A service will take place at the cenotaph at 2pm. There will be a march to Lorton Street Methodist Church where a service will take place at 2.30pm.

In Distington there will be a service at the Church of the Holy Spirit at 9.45am. Wreaths will be laid in the church, before a parade along Church Road and Main Street to the war memorial at 11am.

The parade will finish at the British Legion where there will be refreshments available.

In Egremont a parade will start from the Conservative Club at 10.45am.

It will go to the war memorial for the wreath laying before the service at the Roman Catholic Church at 11.15am.

In Whitehaven a parade will begin from the Copeland Centre at 10.30am. The march will proceed to Castle Park, where there will be a service at 11am. The parade will continue to the Civic Hall afterwards.

Other services on Sunday include:

St Michael’s church in Dalston at 10am;

outside the memorial hall in Longtown at 10.45am, followed by wreath-laying at the memorial cross at 11am;

a united service for the Rosley parishes will be held at Westward at 10.30am;

a service and wreath-laying at the Brandraw car park in Aspatria at 2.30pm.
