Cumbrian man knocked out ex-girlfriend during row

A man who knocked his ex-girlfriend unconscious during an argument has been sent on a course to control his temper.

Christopher Lowe, 23, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm to Carly Richardson during an incident at her home.

It was, Carlisle Crown Court heard, the culmination of “a turbulent and even tempestuous relationship”.

“They can’t live together and they can’t live apart,” defence barrister Steven McNally said.

Prosecutor Alan Lovett told the court Lowe had gone to Ms Richardson’s house while she was having a get-together with some of her woman friends.

He started arguing with her and pushed her “with substantial force”, so that she fell over and hit her head on the floor.

Ms Richardson needed hospital treatment for a gash to the back of her head.

Lowe was said to have 26 previous convictions for offences such as affray and threatening behaviour and had been cautioned twice for assaults on Ms Richardson.

The court heard that Lowe, who has recently been staying with Ms Richardson’s mother in Harrison Street, Currock, Carlisle, was now determined to tackle the drink problem that led to his loss of temper.

Judge Charles Mahon put him under probation supervision for two years on condition that he attends a domestic violence programme which should help him control his temper.

But he added he made the order “without much optimism”.
