A courageous woman from Workington will cycle 1,000 miles to raise money for the charities that helped her cancer-stricken mother.

Alison Graham, 53, has recently been given the all-clear after being struck down with breast cancer for the second time in seven years.

And her daughter Jennifer Graham, 32, of Douglas Road, has decided to cycle from Land’s End to John o’ Groats to help other families touched by cancer.

She will be joined by friend and colleague Margaret Wilson, 55, of Distington.

Jennifer said: “I want to do something positive and get some money for the charities. When she was diagnosed I started to think there must be something I can do and then I woke up in the middle of the night at Christmas time with his idea.”

Margaret added: “It’s a good cause and one that I feel strongly about. It’s something I cannot wait to do. To me it’s the mental challenge and it won’t beat me.”

The proceeds of their epic bike ride in July will be split equally between Cancer Research UK, and Breast Cancer Care.

The women, who work together at the British Cattle Movement Service, are aiming to cover 82 miles a day.

This would mean they could potentially complete the challenge in just under a fortnight.

Both of them are now in training at the gym, and will get out on their bikes with the approach of the warmer weather.

Margaret is also doing boxing and kettlercise to help prepare her for the challenge ahead.

She said they were hoping to raise “thousands of pounds” for charity.

Alison, who is recovering has had a mastectomy and radiotherapy treatment, said: “I’m proud of them both. I think what they are doing is amazing.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer.”

Doctors caught the cancer early and Alison is feeling fine now.

She will be following the women on their journey – though her chosen mode of transport will have four wheels and an engine.
