A woman will spend this weekend making 600 cupcakes in a 24-hour bakeathon – and run half a mile every hour in memory of her friend’s son.

Saskia Patrick, 27, of Dearham, is completing the challenge to raise cash for the charity Booktastic.

She hopes to raise between £500 and £600 and the cakes will be sold the next day.

Booktastic is a charity set up by Saskia’s friend Fiona Grove who lost her son Wilf to a cancerous brain tumour.

Fiona now provides books and audio books to the children’s ward at the Great North Children’s Infirmary in Newcastle and is grateful to her friends who help her fundraise.

Saskia, of Fitz Road, Cockermouth, will be also be running the London Marathon in April to support the charity so she’s getting in some practice while baking.

Saskia said: “I know lots of people have raised money by baking cakes, but not many spend 24 hours baking and running at the same time. By the time I finish, I will have run a half marathon and hope to have made about 600 cupcakes.

“During my quest for sponsorship I spoke to the Lakes Free Range Egg Company and they donated two cases of eggs – I think they wanted to make sure I didn’t run out so they gave me enough to bake more than 1,100 cakes.”

Helen Brass, from the Lakes Free Range Egg Company, said: “When Saskia told us about the charity and what she wanted to do, we were impressed.

“Our Laid With Love brand supports cancer research and the yolks are extra yellow – perfect for cake baking. We’ve sampled Saskia’s cupcakes and know they look and taste fantastic so have no doubt her bakeathon will be a great success.”

Other local businesses donating ingredients include Armathwaite Hall, Carrs Flour, the Co-op, Hoopers and the Trout Hotel.

The bakeathon begins at 9am.
