Tragedy: The blaze broke out in Walker Road, Salterbeck, on July 17

The casualty, named by neighbours as 34-year-old Louise Ray, suffered burns to her arms and upper body in the blaze in Walker Road, Salterbeck, in the early hours of yesterday.

She was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Fire crews from Workington and Whitehaven were at the scene for two hours.

A neighbour, Laura Patten, 30, rang the emergency services. She said she ran down the street through thick smoke to get to the victim.

She sat with her as she was treated by paramedics.

Ms Patten said: “My main concern was getting her out of that house.

“I hope she is okay. I want her and her family to know we are thinking about her.”

The fire is not thought to be suspicious.

An investigation into its cause is underway.
