Cumbrian town's carnival cancelled for 2012

Maryport Carnival will not go ahead this year because of a lack of cash and volunteers.

The carnival which began in 1971, grew into once of the area’s top summer events.

However the carnival has faltered in recent years.

It was cancelled in 2009 but has been back on the calendar for the past two years. Russell Fisher, one of the last remaining committee members, confirmed this year’s cancellation.

He said there was £2,000 left in the carnival committee’s kitty but it could not meet the event’s running cost of £6,000.

As well as financial concerns, there was a shortage of volunteers to run the event.

Mr Fisher said that £2,000 would be put in a frozen account for a set number of years, still to be decided, to give someone an opportunity to restart the carnival if necessary.

He added: “I would like to think the carnival will be revived but it will not be by any of the present committee.”

Carni McCarron-Holmes, Maryport resident and councillor, who was the carnival committee’s first secretary in 1970 and has been involved ever since, said: “I don’t know if it is a sign of the times or just apathy, but this is a great shame.

“Over the years we have brought some tremendous bands and performers.

“It contributed to the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of the town but in recent years it has been too hard to get money or commitment.”

Have your say

Wow someone commenting about it being racist because someone mocked a serial killer, just because of his beliefs and race. Look at the context of it before you cry racism, or better still, find something more worthy to complain about.

As an Ex - Chairman of Maryport Carnival Committee it is sad to see its demise, this however started during the late 90s when the Police changed the route, it was very difficult then to raise money to sponsor the event, we had a relativly small Committee but we all worked hard and actually put money in out of our own pockets @ various fund raising events, People like Dan couldnt be found then ??, Russell Fisher and His Committee are People who make the Town tick but alas times change, as do People. I have followed the comments below and to be quite truthful i found the Racist ones quite amusing, i have worked, and lived, in Dubai - Abu Dhabi - Muscat and now Doha, all in the Middle East and People here are not at all like Osama Bin Laden, they are some of the humblest People you could ever hope to meet, they would not be offended, rememeber old Peter "Canch", People like Him were very near the knuckle but entertaining to say the least, finally i do believe that Maryport was the best Carnival and others were jealous of its success. R.I.P Maryport Carnival, thanks for the Memories.

Are we neglecting north Cumbria's heritage and tourist attractions while concentrating on the Lake District?

Yes, the Lakes have always taken all the investment

No, nothing in the north can compare with anything the Lake District

Nothing will change now. We are Cumbria's forgotten corner
